This friday, February 14th, it is Saint Valentine's. What is the origin of this celebration? Well, History.com, gives us some information about it.
"Each year on February 14th, many people exchange cards, candy, gifts or flowers with their special “valentine.” The day of romance we call Valentine’s Day is named for a Christian martyr and dates back to the 5th century, but has origins in the Roman holiday Lupercalia."
What more can we know about this day?
Valentine of Rome was a priest under Emperor Claudius II. Claudius was a very ambitious Emperor, and he banned marriage to avoid soldiers from feeling home sick. Priest Valentine did not agree with Emperor's measures about marriage, so he secretly married young couples. When the Emperor found out, he was sentenced to death. Apparently, he fell in love with his jailer's daughter and on the day he was executed ,February the 14th, it is known he passed the young girl a note, signed "from your Valentine". A tradition was born from that story.
